Energy Levels

Energy helps us to meet the daily demands of life and to fulfil our goals and dreams.  It enables us to be physically active and to enjoy a social, work and family life.

There are many factors which can trigger unbalanced energy levels - the most obvious being the food we eat and the amount of sleep we are getting.

Appropriate nutrition is essential to healthy energy metabolism.  In order for the body to make ATP (the body’s primary energy currency which powers virtually every activity) we require optimal intakes of vitamins, minerals and macronutrients. Even with what may be considered ‘adequate’ nutritional intake, energy demands may exceed energy input and stores, especially in the presence of stressors be them emotional or physical.  The types of foods we eat and when we eat them can also have a direct impact on our energy levels throughout the day. Blood sugar balance plays a key role.

Other factors which promote healthy energy metabolism include:

  • Optimal digestive function (Even if we are eating a healthy diet, it is essential that we can effectively digest and absorb the food. In this way, we can access all of the nutrients needed to make energy.)

  • Adequate detoxification and avoidance of toxins (If we are overburdened with toxins, we may often feel tired and lethargic.  Some toxins can directly restrict our energy pathways.)

  • Healthy hormone balance eg thyroid, oestrogen or stress hormones

  • Good hydration

  • Pain management

  • Optimal mood

  • Healthy immunity

Your nutritional therapist understands the biochemistry of energy metabolism and can develop a programme specifically for you which will supporty healthy energy levels.  Laboratory testing may be recommended.
