With dry skin, the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication. As a result, the skin becomes dehydrated. Dry skin can be a temporary condition or more long-term.
Causes
A number of factors that may to contribute towards dry skin:
- Nutritional deficiencies e.g. essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, E and zinc
- Dehydration
- Exposure to harsh elements e.g. wind, cold, excessive sun
- Central heating and air conditioning
- Hot baths and showers
- Exposure to irritating cosmetics, toiletries, cleaning products
- Other skin conditions such as Eczema or Psoriasis
- Diabetes
- Hypothyroidism
- Certain drugs, including antihistamines, diuretics and antispasmodics
- Genetic factors
Nutritional factors to consider
- Correction of nutritional deficiencies
- Adequate hydration
- Management of hypothyroidism, eczema, psoriasis or diabetes, where relevant
