Frequently Asked Questions

What is WWP?

WWP is a programme based on nutritional and lifestyle changes designed to help you achieve optimum health and wellbeing. It uses diet, exercise, nutritional supplements (optional), and stress management techniques to help you reach your personal health goals - whether they be related to weight loss, weight gain, muscle building, reducing cholesterol, or simply feeling better, more energetic and fitter.  WWP focuses on education so that you can carry these changes into the future with or without our help.

What does WWP involve?

WWP is a twelve-week programme offering fortnightly contact sessions with one of our nutritional therapists to support you and monitor your progress.  You will be assisted through every step of the programme and given detailed, personalised information about recommended dietary and lifestyle changes. If desired, coaching is available to those looking for extra support in implementing change.

The first consultation is 1½ hours long, the rest are between 20-30 minutes. Using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, a range of readings will be taken at each session to allow you to see the progress for yourself in black and white. The measurements include weight, body fat, lean muscle mass, visceral (abdominal) fat, hydration levels, and waist to hip ratio.

Who is WWP aimed at?

WWP is aimed at anyone who wants to improve their health or manage their weight. It is aimed at people who care about their bodies and want to know how to look after themselves in a nutritionally-balanced and sustainable way.

Will I be made to eat lentils and tofu?

No, not if you don't want to! You will be provided with an extensive list of foods and it is up to you which ones you choose to eat each day.   The plan will provide guidance on how many servings of each type of food you should have.

The diet is based upon the Mediterranean diet but has evolved during 10 years of research. The diet has a low glycaemic load, is naturally anti-inflammatory and provides the body with essential fats, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients for optimal wellbeing.

The diet is reported to satisfy hunger - a study which compared this diet to the American Heart Association (AHA) low fat diet, found that those following this diet consumed fewer calories than the AHA group due to lack of hunger. Conversely, the AHA group consumed their recommended dietary intake, but reported feeling hungry.

What is the Wellbeing bit about?

The WWP is first and foremost about wellbeing - by which we mean feeling energised, having balanced moods, better sleep, healthy and glowing skin, and optimal long-term health.

Good nutrition and regular exercise enables your body to perform at its best.   Many of the chronic diseases associated with aging are linked to poor diet and lack of exercise.  These diseases include:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cancer

Taking steps to improve your diet and lifestyle choices either before these diseases arise or at their early stages can greatly improve your health outcomes.  Other conditions which respond well to dietary & lifestyle intervention include:

  • Stress-related disorders
  • PMS
  • Menopause
  • Other hormone related conditions
  • Mild to moderate depression
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • PCOS
  • Conditions related to overweight/obesity
  • Inflammatory conditions

Will I definitely lose my excess weight on the WWP?

If you have excess weight to lose, the research shows that on average people lose around 6kg on this diet2  over a 12 week period. That does not mean weight loss is limited to 6kg, if you have more to lose then there is no reason why you would not achieve further weight loss on the WWP either during or after the initial 12 weeks.

The WWP is not a "quick fix diet" aimed at people wanting to shed weight very quickly through calorie restriction or excesive exercise. Instead WWP is a three-month programme focused on gradual but sustainable weight normalisation.

I don't have an issue with weight, is WWP for me?

Yes, everyone can benefit from WWP - it is first and foremost about wellbeing which means your general health should improve and your long term health is likely to benefit.

BIA measurements will enable you to see your body composition - this is far more informative that weight alone.  Many people do not require 'weight loss' but could still benefit from 'fat loss' and 'muscle gain'. An approach based around body composition is what sets WWP apart from most other programmes.  You will gain a deeper knowledge of food and nutrition, enabling you to maintain your health long after the 12 weeks are over.

What happens after 12 weeks?

For most people, 12 weeks is sufficient to see results, understand the programme and carry on without our help. You are invited to return for periodic follow-ups after the initial programme has ended but this is not essential. A visit every 3 - 6 months enables you to stay on track or check on your progress with muscle mass or body fat reduction.

Some clients who are in high-risk categories for cardiovascular disease or type II diabetes or those aiming for substantial weight loss may wish to maintain more regular contact.  If the goal-posts are further away, ongoing support and encouragement can really make a difference.

Can I do some of the sessions by phone?

Yes, we understand that for many people, it may be difficult to make it to our clinic every fortnight. If you can't make it for some of the sessions, we can still hold the consultation by phone. It will not be possible to take your BIA reading during telephone consultations but measurements will simply be taken at your next face to face appointment.

I am on medication, can I still do the WWP programme?

Being on medication usually does not prevent someone from following a healthy eating and exercise programme.  Medication and general health history will be discussed at your first consultation. If there are any reasons (medication or otherwise) that we do not think this is the right programme for you, then we will recommend another approach. If you are unsure please contact us for a free mini-consult to discuss your specific circumstances.

Are laboratory tests required?

If you are aware of issues with your blood lipids, cholesterol, insulin or other markers, we recommend that you ask your GP for a re-test at the start of the programme.  This is so that you know your baseline measurements before you begin WWP. Comparing these to subsequent test results enables you to see for yourself the improvements that have been made through diet and lifestyle change.  This is a great motivator to help you maintain the programme long term and keep your risk of illness reduced. Key Nutrition can arrange the above tests to be carried out privately, if desired.

At Key Nutrition, we also work with clients to address specific health issues. WWP is focussed on dietary and lifestyle change for improved wellbeing and weight. However, if a specific issue comes up during the programme and we feel that investigation through tests may be worthwhile, we will discuss this with you but there is no obligation to proceed. Tests are an additional cost and in some cases, a small fee may apply if additional consultation time is required to discuss the results.

How much exercise is required?

This largely depends on how much exercise you presently do. The aim is to incorporate 30mins of exercise most days. The level of intensity of the exercise is dependant on past activity levels and physical ability. If it has been a while since you were last active, we will take this into account, start you off gently and provide you with a programme to follow.

If you are over 60, have a BMI over 28 or have not exercised for some time, we may recommend that you consult your GP before starting any exercise.

Can my partner or friend do WWP with me?

Yes.  This programme is about changing diet and lifestyle for the long term and so approaching it as a couple or doing it along side a friend is ideal.  You are then able to support each other and can share an appreciation and understanding of the changes being made.

Do you offer business WWP packages?

Yes, we can come to your place of work and carry out the programme with staff onsite.  This is an excellent way to get your team fit, healthy and happy.  Please contact us to discuss the various programme options.

What is Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis?

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a valuable tool for measuring body composition.  It provides estimates of body fat, lean muscle mass, visceral (abdominal) fat and hydration levels.  This is far more informative than simply looking at weight or BMI. For example, it is possible for someone to be a 'normal' weight and BMI yet still have an unhealthy body fat percentage.

Taking a BIA reading is much like using regular bathroom scales except you will need to take your shoes and socks off and hold onto a handle.  The scales pass a harmless, undetectable low-level current thought the body.

Lean tissue is an excellent conductor due to the high water and electrolyte content but fatty tissue is a poor conductor.  This conductivity measurement, coupled with height and weight enables the scales to determine an estimate of body composition. This is based on algorithms validated through independent clinical studies.

The use of BIA to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment strategies for various health conditions is widespread. BIA is used in many studies and clinical trials around the world. More information.

Note: BIA should not be used on individuals fitted with pacemakers or defibrillators. BIA is also not advised during pregnancy.

Can I see the research?

There is extensive research illustrating the link bewteen diet and lifestyle with health outcome. The following research relates directly to the First Line Therapy® diet which WWP is based upon. Research has been done both on the diet alone and the diet with the UltraMeal 360 supplement. This supplement is especially useful to those with raised markers for cardiovascular or diabetes risk.
